Venues who only recommend agencies….

A couple of weeks ago (as a New Year’s resolution!), we started getting in touch with all the wedding venues most local to us where we play regularly (in many cases for several weddings or functions every year.)
Often on a wedding venue website or kept in a folder at the venue, there is a helpful list of local, trusted suppliers such as florists, toastmasters, string quartets and photographers, so this is helpful to both nearby wedding businesses like us and also couples looking for services from local, recommended suppliers.
Getting in touch with venues was generally very well received as most were only too glad to list us (and some venue staff said some very nice things about our quartet which made us blush!)…. but we did approach one local venue (literally a 10 minute drive away) who told us that they have a mutual arrangement with a nationwide entertainment agency and send all enquiries straight to them. So, potential brides and grooms would have to book a string quartet through an agency.
We were a little bit disappointed to hear this as it means this venue is not supporting the local community by recommending local suppliers and couples are quite possibly paying a bit more for their wedding entertainment than they need to. After all, paying for a string quartet to travel all the way up from Kent, plus the agents commission will be a lot more expensive than booking a group from 5 miles away….and of course the couple can’t get in touch with the group directly to talk through their individual needs as all communication must go via the agent.
Anyway, it was all a bit sad and all we can suggest is that if a venue have only recommended a nationwide agency and couples prefer to support local businesses, when searching for wedding suppliers, they can look online using geographical search terms such as ‘Photographer in Aylesbury’, ‘String Quartet in Buckinghamshire’ or ‘Florist in Tring’ to find local people……or ask around…. word of mouth is often the best recommendation.
