Traveller’s Tales: Themed String Quartet Concert in Cuddington

On Saturday, we were delighted to return to play a concert at the beautiful Church of St. Nicholas in Cuddington – a picturesque village on the border of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
We have played two concerts in this Church previously – one entitled ‘An A to Z of Music’ and a second one at Christmas, including original carol arrangements from our two albums. This time, we gave a recital of light and popular music entitled ‘Traveller’s Tales’ – a programme we have performed in other Churches to a warm reception.
The theme of the evening is to represent different countries with various pieces – perhaps by a composer of that nationality, or with the country in the title of the work. Pieces included ‘Danse Hongroise’ by Delibes (covering Hungary), Rondo Alla Turka by Mozart (representing Turkey), a Strauss Gallop for Austria and Borodin’s Nocturne from Russia. You can hear us performing the Nocturne here:
We interspersed the pieces with informal announcements which mixed musical history with humour and anecdotes – this seemed to go down extremely well with the audience.
As each piece was fairly short, we were able to play a real mixture of styles and pieces so that there was something for everyone and with a healthy sized audience of about 85 (on the same night as the BBC broadcast of Last Night of the Proms!), the Church had a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Members of the congregation provided wonderful refreshments, with donations towards the Kampala Music School in Uganda and we hope that a good amount was raised for this excellent cause.
With plans and discussions already in the pipeline about another concert early next year at the same Church, we feel very at home at St. Nicholas and are looking forward to playing once again in Cuddington.
