Battle of Britain Military Dinner

By vaughan • September 18, 2010 • Posted in: Functions and Events

On Thursday, Rachel (cellist) and I were booked to perform a selection of music for string duo during a military dinner celebrating the anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

As is usual during military functions, we were asked to play the National Anthem and on this occasion, we also played the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ as there were American guests present at the dinner. We started in a foyer area as everyone entered to sit down (they had just experienced an aerial display from a Spitfire plane) and continued throughout the evening until around 11pm.

The evening was punctuated by the gavel going down on the head table, a cue for various speeches about aspects of the Battle of Britain. also present was a Winston Churchill impersonator who made speeches throughout the course of the dinner, so we had to be prepared to stop and start playing quite rapidly so that music worked around the speeches.

We always enjoy providing music for military dinners and find the guests very appreciative and hospitable.
