Rehearsal for next Thursday - Cadogan Hall Concert
Today, the quartet got together at Julia’s house for the first rehearsal of some new works by contemporary English composer Philip G. W Henderson - which we will be premiering at the Cadogan Hall in London next Thursday evening, the 23rd September.
The concert is entitled ‘Penny Smith Unveils’ and features not only the two quartet works ‘Hop Pickers Daughter’ and ‘Having Said Goodbye to Alice’ but a suite of music for strings called ‘Magic Wood’ which some of us recorded with Philip last year, and two more new works called ‘Sea Voices’ and ‘This Too Shall Pass’. Other performers on the evening will be Steve Hackett on guitar and singer Pia Sukanya, we very much look forward to working with both of them.
As Philip will be conducting the ensemble himself, it will be a very special evening - especially as profits from the concert will go towards the Moran Blind School in Assam, India - via the charity Soundaround.
Today we worked most specifically on the two quartet pieces, but could not resist playing through some of the parts of the larger works to get a feel for the tempos and flow of this evocative music. The players in the main quartet will be myself and Louise Bevan on violins, with Adrian Smith on viola and Julia Graham on cello.
On the evening itself, other players from our group will be joining us, so the violins will also include Ruth Funnell, Gabrielle Painter and Judith Templeman. Reiad Chibah on viola, Emma Black on Cello and Ben Russell on Double Bass will make up what should be a very well blended ensemble.
Ticket prices range from £15 to £35 and can be purchased from the Cadogan Hall box office or via their website.
