Music for a 90th Birthday Party

On Sunday, Nancy (Viola) and I were excited to be playing for a 90th birthday party at a venue down in Surrey. The music we had been asked to play was of a popular classical and light in nature with a few carols as we were getting near to Christmas. The lady whose birthday it was had an interesting story about how her mother used to tune up violins by ear (probably having perfect pitch) and didn’t think anything of it - until a local teacher remarked on how unusual this gift was and offered her music lessons. As she could not afford the lessons, she instead opted for her daughter to have the lessons and it was this daughter who we were playing for on Sunday.

It was an intimate gathering of about 20 or so guests, so the string duo was absolutely perfect and thoroughly enjoyed by all. As we finished playing, two ladies politely asked whether there was any possibility of us playing the melody from the Vera Lynn song ‘We’ll Meet Again’ - which we duly attempted without any music, just about managing a recognisable rendition of the main theme!
