Music for a birthday party

On Saturday we were engaged to play for a 70th birthday celebration which involved a service of thanksgiving followed by a banquet in Walthamstow Town Hall. For the ceremony, we were required to accompany 8 members of the BBC singers in the opening of Vivaldi’s Gloria. It was a real joy to listen to such accomplished vocalists and the combination of singers with string quartet worked well.

Later in the service, we played Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and Panis Angelicus by Cesar Franck, both of which were specially requested by the lady celebrating her birthday. In addition, the singers gave an outstanding rendition of Zadok the Priest by Handel before the guests moved on to the civic centre which was only a mile away.

During food, we played on the raised stage and provided a lively mixture of light and classical music. As would be expected from a hall which has hosted many famous recordings, the acoustics were excellent and many people commented on how nice the music sounded.

It was really terrific to be a part of this special day as the sense of community both at the church and banquet afterwards were palpable. The client clearly was loved by all and it was a privilege to bring music to the celebrations.
