Wedding at De Vere University Arms Hotel, Cambridge
Although the violin / viola combination is probably the most popular option people chose when booking a string duo, last week we were asked to perform as a Violin / Cello combination. The ‘cello is a beautiful instrument visually and although all the music we have arranged for duo is available for both combinations of instruments, the ‘cello works best with chamber music specifically written for it.
Last week, we made our way up to Cambridge to play for a wedding at the De Vere University Arms Hotel - providing music for the drinks reception and during the wedding breakfast. We played to the strength of the ‘cello and performed some beautiful classical music such as the Beethoven Duets (which were originally written for bassoon and clarinet but are widely played on the violin / cello), a piece by Dotzauer which is wonderfully melodious and well written for the instruments, also some of my own arrangements of pieces by Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Handel and Elgar. The guests thoroughly enjoyed the music and the grandfather of the bride was particularly appreciative as he had spent all of his working life as a professional tuba player and had performed on many film and television soundtracks as a session musician - it was wonderful to spend time talking to him about some of his experiences and he was very knowledgeable about all the music we performed.
