Accompanying the hymns….

By vaughan • August 26, 2009 • Posted in: Weddings

On Saturday we were asked to play for a traditional church wedding on the border of Hertfordshire and Essex, then go on to provide music at a nearby venue for the drinks reception.

As usual, we performed some uplifting music as the guests arrived and took their seats, helping to create a romantic atmosphere in the church itself. Once we received the signal that the bride was due to enter, we rounded off the piece we were playing and switched to the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin (Wagner) to accompany her entrance. As there was to be no organ or choir during the service, we were pleased to accompany the singing of hymns which sounded lovely in the acoustics of the church.

As well as playing the hymns, we performed two pieces requested by the bridal couple for the signing of their register and another traditional favourite (Mendelssohn’s Wedding March) for their exit as a married couple. As the reception was very nearby, we only had a short journey before we had to quickly set up again to entertain the guests during photographs and drinks reception.

In many civil ceremonies where there are no hymns, we are frequently only asked to play for the entrance, signing of the register and exit, so with the hymns as well it was great to have so many opportunities to play during the ceremony itself.
