Concert at St Giles Church, 15th May 2009

Despite forecasts of rain, the weather was absolutely beautiful on the Friday evening of our village church concert and brought the audience out en masse. I think that it’s not a bad way to end the working week - coming along to a country church and enjoying a glass of wine whilst hearing some classical music.
Everyone had worked hard to publicise the concert and after a day of rehearsals, we were delighted that the church was packed with 110 people attending - the church even had to put out some extra chairs at the last minute so that there was enough seating.
We kept the programme generally very popular with enjoyable tunes, but threw in a few less familiar pieces so that the audience had the chance to hear something a little bit less well known. As usual, we talked a little bit about each piece or composer before playing and the evening was very informal, with some lovely comments from audience members at the end. We presented the concert as a ‘trip around the world’ with works from composers of each different country - starting here in England with Greensleeves and coming home again at the end with the cleverly arranged folk tunes of Holst’s St Pauls Suite (the last movement of which also contains the theme of Greensleeves).
The best news of all, is that as well as being able to play in our own village (therefore recognizing a large percentage of the audience), the church made a very healthy profit on the evening!
