Mr Beveridge’s Maggot

By vaughan • April 12, 2009 • Posted in: Weddings

We’re often asked whether we can play special requests for wedding ceremonies. Usually it’s a piece of particular significance for the couple getting married.

Yesterday, we played an arrangement of an old English folk tune which was used in the BBC production of Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ as well as the recent film adaptation of ‘Emma’. The tune is called ‘Mr Beveridge’s Maggot’ and accompanies stately dancing in the films where there is a degree of romantic interest!

The bride had approached us several months ago asking about this piece which she loved and we managed to locate the sheet music and transcribe it for the combination of violin and viola duo. It created a magical atmosphere as the bride entered and was an original alternative to the standard wedding processional pieces.

When someone approaches us with such a specialised request, we often have to source, notate or transcribe the music and it’s very rewarding to provide something unique that personalises the ceremony.
