Beat the intro….

Every year, our group play for over a hundred weddings in addition to all our concerts, recitals and other engagements. With very few exceptions, the weddings are really lovely occasions and we wholeheartedly enjoy playing for people - but some weddings really do stand out as being quite unique, and one good example would be a reception we played for a few weeks ago at Quendon Park in Essex.

At this particular wedding, the groom had an inspired idea. Between the courses during the wedding breakfast, the guests were to play a ‘beat the intro’ game with Adrian (viola) and I providing the intros on string duo.

Special cards had been printed for each table and the winning group were presented with a bottle of champagne before the speeches. The best man acted as toastmaster (complete with red jacket and white gloves) and effortlessly gained the attention of all when the game was due to start. The first few bars of some well known pieces were played and there was an excited buzz as wedding guests tried to guess the title.

The wedding had a party atmosphere and real exuberance and it was a great example of how live music can really make the occasion and break the ice, so people on shared tables - who may not have known each other very well to begin with - ended up laughing and chatting together.

So often we are asked to play background music during a wedding reception, and while that’s always terrific, it felt great to really entertain the guests in such an upbeat way!
